2020 Fair & Rodeo Cancelled.... Read more

Columbia County Fair cancelled due to Covid-19

Board planning alternative smaller events and activities for community.

On Thursday, May 7, Governor Kate Brown handed down a long-awaited program to start phasing in sectors of the economy, including restaurants, retail, and other areas. However, during Phase 1, only gatherings of 25 or less is allowed, and Phase 2 might only allow up to as many as 100 people. Governor Brown announced that all other concerts, sporting events and large festival gatherings would have to be cancelled, postponed or modified.

Based on this information, the Board met on Thursday night and voted to cancel the annual fair, which was in line with cancellations of the county fairs in all of the surrounding counties. The event and fair business has been hit particularly hard in this pandemic as it is typically the major source of income for many of these organizations.

However, the fair board was adamant about not letting the year go to waste. While no firm plans have been made yet, the Board is actively exploring ideas for smaller events throughout the summer and fall that would allow the community to still enjoy the fairgrounds and offer families fun and exciting activities to enjoy together - albeit in smaller groups to keep in line with the state mandates for responsible social distancing.

On a brighter note, the Board did agree to allow Rodeo Queen Jessica Lincoln to hold on to her title until the next queen could be crowned.

The Fair Board is hoping to make the most of this season and promises that the regular fair, as Columbia County residents know it, will be back next year!

The Board will be announcing alternative events and activities in coming weeks.
